The University of New Mexico Student Union Building is serving as an early voting location starting Oct. 19 until Nov. 2. The SUB early voting will be open Monday through Saturday 10 a.m. - 7 p.m. The early voting is located in Louie’s lounge downstairs next to Mercado and Nusenda Credit Union.
The SUB will be one of 20 early voting locations in the Bernalillo County area, which includes Albuquerque. The SUB is the closest voting location within at least 2 miles for students who want to vote but have a busy schedule of classes. The next closest location is Central Mercado, which is on San Pedro Dr.
Although early voting is in the SUB, there is no signage indicating directly where the set up is located in Louie's lounge.
“I had a hard time finding the early voting spot. I didn’t really see any signs or indication on where to go,” says Herman Padilla, a New Mexico resident who voted on Oct. 21. Padilla says that he was only able to find out about the location through the help of SUB employees.
Despite the difficulty, some students found it easy to come and vote. Sarah Martinez, a junior at UNM, said having the SUB as a voting location made the process convenient. “It’s so easy to stop by and vote between classes. It definitely is convenient that UNM has a voting center,” she said.
Martinez also mentioned that she only knew where the voting was because of social media.
Students are the main demographic that come to vote, but all eligible Bernalillo voters are welcome in the SUB location, according to the vote center's staff.
Although early voting ends on Nov. 2, the SUB will also be open Election Day, Tuesday, Nov. 5.
