Poll results recently revealed more than 53 percent of New Mexicans say their biggest concerns this election cycle were the economy and crime. Both issues have been at the forefront of debate for Senate candidates Democrat Sen. Martin Heinrich and Republican Nella Domenici, according to Ballotpedia.

In a poll released August 2024 from Emerson College and The Hill, nearly 1,000 New Mexicans were asked what issues matter the most to them and what their opinions were in regards to the 2024 election candidates. Along with the economy and crime, healthcare and immigration made the list as topics of interest for voters this year. Residents were able to participate in the poll for three days from August 20th to 22nd and results were released the following day.

With the election approaching this November, these results show how New Mexicans are paying close attention to issues being discussed on the campaign trail.

Another weekly poll released by Emerson College shows Heinrich polling 12 points ahead of opponent Domenici, leading 49 percent to 37 percent. Heinrich is running for re-election and has built his platform, available on his campaign website, on the promise of a safer and more prosperous New Mexico. The site highlights economic opportunity.

New Mexico voters follow national trends, political analyst Gabe Sanchez recently told KRQE.

Senator Heinrich has the name recognition; he’s got the credibility. His record is nearly spotless in terms of legislative, so he’s not vulnerable in any stretch of the imagination,” Sanchez says.

Both Emerson College and The Hill post poll results regularly. As Election Day draws closer, there may be further shifts among New Mexican voters.
